Emberley Hall

About

The Regency and Victorian world, told slowly

Emberley Hall is for people who love the Regency and Victorian world. The romance, the drama, the manners and the mess of it.

An empty rose-pink drawing room with a fire burning

Some videos are documentaries about how life worked in Britain between 1795 and 1901. Courtship and the marriage market. What a lady's maid did before her mistress was awake. What food, rent and a decent dress cost. These are built from real photographs, engravings, paintings, fashion plates and letters, with the source shown on screen.

Some are about the books and the people in them. What Elizabeth Bennet's world was like. What Jane Eyre's wages were worth. Austen, the Brontës and the rest, read alongside the history of their time.

And some are stories, told with the same pictures and the same care. Old ones retold, and new ones written here.

Who writes here

Articles and stories are signed with pen names. Each pen name belongs to a real member of the team who checks the sources and approves the piece. How we make it explains the rest.
